Choir & Music
‘Sing to the Lord, all the earth. Tell of his salvation from day to day.’
For over 1000 years, St Michael’s glorious spaces have resonated with choral music. Today, the Church’s choir and organist perform at services every Sunday during term-time, with the repertoire ranging from the Renaissance to newly-commissioned works. The Director of Music, Colin Hamling, is always interested to hear from potential singers. Our choir is made up of adult members and up to 12 teenage choral scholars.
Joining the Choir
We are always interested in hearing from singers about joining our well-known church choir. There are opportunities for sopranos, altos, tenors and basses. We meet on a Friday evening at 7.45pm for one hour.
How to join:
A very informal audition is required before joining. This will include a chat with the Director of Music and Vicar to discuss the commitments, and the singing of a hymn. For further details, please contact the Director of Music, Colin, on: music@parishofstmichaels.org.uk
Joining as a choral scholar:
Our choral scholarship programme is designed to support the musical development of young people in secondary school. Scholars are expected to attend rehearsals and the 9:30am Sunday Eucharist roughly 3 times a month, for which they receive a generous bursary. There is an informal interview with the Director of Music and Vicar, with a prepared piece and a sight-reading test. For further details, please contact the Director of Music, Colin, on: music@parishofstmichaels.org.uk
Joining as an organ scholar:
St Michael’s Organ Scholarship supports the training and development of a young person in the skills of a Church musician. Duties will include playing the organ for all (or part) of at least 3 services per month, attending associated rehearsals, and conducting the choir (where appropriate). A bursary (currently £200 a term) will be paid which is intended to be used for the purchase of music, attending relevant courses, and subsidising the cost of organ lessons. For further details, please contact the Director of Music, Colin, on: music@parishofstmichaels.org.uk
The Organ
St. Michael’s is fortunate to possess a fine Peter Collins organ dating from 1980. The organ has stops spread over two manuals and pedals. The body of the organ, housing the Great, Swell and Pedal divisions, is situated in the West End of the church. It is available for private practice around the other diary requirements of the church. To enquire about use of the organ please contact the Director of Music on: music@parishofstmichaels.org.uk.
